8 Tips to Get Organized for Your Summer Garage Sale

Summer is here, and it is time for that all-important tradition of garage sales! Whether you are looking to make extra money (to hire that house cleaning service that you have been thinking about), declutter, or just do some summer cleaning – garage sales can take work. Here are eight ideas to get you organized.

“Stop at this yard sale, you must” – Yoda

Your town or neighborhood may have some rules about where and when you can have garage sales, and a permit may be required. Also look into any restriction on signage. Some cities have penalties for signs that are left up after the garage sale is over. The rules for Norman can be found here and for Moore here.

“I pity the fool that doesn’t come to this garage sale.”
– Mr. T.

Usually, garage sales are in May, June, and July on Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays. Give the community calendar a quick glance to see if any events may draw attention away from your sale.

And of course, in Oklahoma, we have to think about the weather. Think about how the weather might be on the date you select and prepare a backup plan.

It is also nice to give the neighbors a heads up in the days before the garage sale, so they will know that there will be extra traffic and parked cars.

“Is it a yard sale or a really inexpensive department store?
Come and see for yourself!” – Unknown

In the week leading up the garage sale, you can group items in the garage or a spare room. You can sort them by category or theme like kitchen, bedroom, or kids and separate them into boxes or garbage bags.

“Hello? Is it deals your looking for?” – Lionel Ritchie

Some things that you might need for your garage sale are: signs to put around your neighborhood, price stickers, money organizer, petty cash for change, tables, display signs, markers, an extension cord (if customers want to try electronics), cleaning supplies, plastic grocery bags, staple gun, tablecloths, scissors, hangers, notepad and pen, chairs, and a trash can.

“I don’t always go to yard sales, but when I do, I go to this one.”
– The most interesting man in the world

Customers tend to avoid items that are dusty or stained. To make items look new, use cleaning wipes or a Mr. Clean magic eraser.

“We’ve got gadgets and gizmos aplenty!” – Ariel, the little mermaid

A commonly forgotten garage sale task is to clean the area where you will be hosting your sale. This can mean cleaning out, emptying, or airing out the garage, or mowing the yard. Click here for some ideas on how to make the outside of your house look nice.

“Oh my gosh Becky! Look at her garage sale!” – Sir Mix-a-Lot

Make colorful, eye-catching signs out of colorful poster board with the date, time, and location of your garage sale. Place the signs at high traffic corners, red lights, or favorite destinations around town (make sure you follow any rules that your city or neighborhood may have about those signs and their removal).

Newspapers are still a wonderful place to advertise because yard-sale junkies use these to find their destinations. You can also advertise in online newspapers like Craigslist.

Go digital! Post the date, time, and location of your garage sale on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. You can post pictures of any fun or unique items that you are selling.

“I like big sales and I cannot lie” – Also Sir Mix-a-Lot

Kick your feet up and relax! You have worked hard. Make sure you have a plan for what to do with unsold items. Items in good condition can be donated to charity. Some charities may even pick up from your home.
