Remove Car Odor Naturally!

Posted on

The summer heat outside activates smells that have been lying low over the winter. I call it the “car funk.”  For some reason, it doesn’t seem so bad until the summer, and then it comes on full force!

Car smells tend to build up over time because of food, pets, kids, and just life! You can use chemicals to mask or remove odor, but artificial fragrances can cause headaches and allergies for some people. Consider this natural method for removing the car funk.

Getting Started

Clean your car early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat. Park the car in the shade and open all windows and doors so the vehicle can air out.  Turn off any lights, lamps, and alarms that might drain the battery.

Next, remove everything you can from the car, including the floor mats, car seats, cups, bags, etc.

Empty the Trash

Bad smells can come from the trash that is hiding in your car. Start by looking for trash everywhere:

  • Under and in between seats
  • Glove compartment
  • Under the floor mats
  • Seat pockets
  • Cup holders
  • Trunk

Vacuum

Before you vacuum, sprinkle baking soda on upholstery and carpets and let it sit for a few hours or overnight.

When ready to vacuum, use a small, stiff brush on the upholstery to loosen up dirt and crumbs.  If you have pets, remove as much hair as you can using a lint roller.

You can use a car, household, or handheld vacuum and then start from the top and work your way down in the car.  Use the smallest attachment you have for seat cushions, under and in between seats, and curves.

If you have leather seats, use a small amount of coconut oil on a cloth rag to clean and shine the leather.

Wipe Down Surfaces

Wipe down every surface in your car with a gentle soap and water solution. Start by filling a spray bottle with water and add ten drops of dish soap to it, and don’t forget to wipe down:

  • Dashboard
  • Glove compartment
  • Steering wheel
  • Cup holders

Wash Car Windows

Pets can leave little nose marks on windows, and smoking can leave a smelly film. Check out our natural glass cleaner recipe to make those car windows sparkle!

Stubborn Smells

If some smells are still hanging on after a good clean, here are a few more ideas to soak up those bad smells:

  • Packaged charcoal odor neutralizers
  • Place coffee beans or grounds in a bowl or bag inside your car overnight
  • Use kitty litter in a bowl or bag overnight
  • Use essential oils (put a few drops on a cotton ball and leave in the cup holder, under the seat, or glove compartment)
  • Consider changing the air filters
