Cleaning Your House to Sell

Selling your home

Are you getting ready to put your house on the market? Many real estate agents suggest that the difference between a house that sells quickly and one that does not is a favorable impression.  So how do you make a good impression?  Here are some tips to get your home ready:

Clean and clean and clean

Clean cabinets, appliances, and windows to make a house look neat and taken care off.   Make sure to get all the small areas that you might normally overlook like baseboards, fan blades, and faucets. You can do one deep clean before putting the house on the market but make sure to clean every couple of weeks to keep the house nice while it is showing.  If you don’t have time, hire 2 Green Chicks!

Fight mold and mildew

Mold and mildew can be a problem in older bathrooms, and prospective home buyers are very sensitive to it.  Make sure and scrub away mildew from showers and grout.

Pay attention to smells

Just like when you visit a hotel, the first thing people notice is the smell.  You want the house to smell clean, but no heavy smells like candles or freshening spray.  Be careful of what you cook on the day of a showing too.  Bacon tastes amazing but doesn’t smell great to home buyers (well not all home buyers).

Pick up the mess

Buyers want to picture themselves in your home.  Pick up shoes by the door or mail from the kitchen table so that buyers can focus on the house.

Do a “faux” renovation

If painting is not in the budget, clean surfaces to remove dust and grime.  Most painted surfaces are washable, and a magic eraser can do wonders on black marks and scuffs on the walls. If any of your furniture is old or worn, use a slipcover or blanket to cover it.

Let there be light!

Bright and cheery rooms are more inviting, so let in natural light or leave a lamp on in darker rooms.

Boost the curb appeal

There are some quick and easy things that you can do to improve the curb appeal of the house.  Read more about that here.
