Easy Homemade Disinfectant Spray

As we discussed a couple of weeks ago here, store-bought cleaning supplies can be filled with toxins and chemicals that are not healthy for your family or the planet.  You can make a disinfectant spray at home with simple ingredients that you may already have.

Usually disinfecting is done after cleaning, and it kills a high percentage of germs and bacteria on your household surfaces.  Disinfectant is perfect to kill germs during flu season (or any time really), in areas where you have handled raw meat, or for the kitchen, doorknobs, and bathrooms!

Start by pouring ½ cup high-proof vodka or rubbing alcohol into a 16 oz spray bottle.

This is booze that you can use! Who said you couldn’t have an “adult beverage” after work and disinfect with it too? If you don’t have vodka handy, you can also use rubbing alcohol. (Vodka by itself is a great natural disinfectant and sanitizer so you can spray on fabrics and carpets, but it can have a strong smell.)  And you don’t have to waste your good vodka – the cheap stuff is fine.

Optional: Next add 50 to 60 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Lemon or citrus is great for the kitchen while tea tree oil is great for the bathroom.  You can also use orange or lavender essential oil for a nice fresh smell. Shake the bottle to mix the vodka (or vinegar) and essential oil.

Next, add ½ cup white distilled vinegar.

Vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner but should not be used on stone surfaces like granite.

Last, add ¾ cup of water.

This recipe only takes about 5 minutes and makes 16 oz of disinfectant spray.
