Nature’s Stain Busters

Posted on

We have blogged before about the best natural cleaners, but what about those yucky stains?  Here are some natural products to use that can remove stains and limit your family’s exposure to dangerous chemicals.

Baking Soda

Banking soda is the champion of natural home cleaners.  You can add a scoop to your washer to boost detergent performance, soften fabrics and reduce suds for quicker loads in front load washers. Baking soda can remove tough stains like grease, oil, gravy, and bodily fluids.

Distilled White Vinegar

If baking soda is the superhero, then white vinegar is a powerful sidekick.  White vinegar can be used to remove those tough yellow underarm sweat stains on t-shirts, and it is gentler than chlorine bleach. It can also be used to remove tomato-based stains. White vinegar can be added directly to an empty washer to control musty odors.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a great first aid tool, but it can also be used to remove nail polish, curry, and red wine stains.  Make sure and test an area of the cloth first for color safeness.

Salt

Salt is a great stain remover if you spill something on yourself when you are at a restaurant.  Pour salt over the stain immediately and then blot the stain with a damp napkin after about 15 minutes.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a great stain remover, especially on white clothes, but should be used with care since it has similar properties to bleach.  Use lemon juice on stains like ice cream, baby food, and berry stains.
